For cleaning polyurethane adhesives or thinning epoxies, lacquers, and polyester resins, Adheseal Acetone is a fast-drying solvent that dissolves many natural and synthetic gums, waxes, oils, and dyes.

What it does

Adheseal Acetone is a clear, water-thin solvent that acts as both a cleanup agent and a viscosity reducer. It readily mixes with water, alcohols, esters, ethers, and other organic solvents to clear residues from application equipment. As a thinner, it modifies the working consistency of acetone-based PVC and polyurethane adhesives, as well as polyester resins used in fiberglass boat and automotive repairs.

Where to use it

This solvent is suitable for use with:

  • Polyurethane and PVC adhesives
  • Epoxies and lacquers
  • Polyester resins and fibreglass
  • Natural and synthetic gums, waxes, oils, and dyes

Limitations

  • Do not use for cleaning equipment used for polystyrene foam, as the solvent will attack and dissolve polystyrene foam.
  • This is an extremely flammable solvent. To prevent hazardous, flammable vapour build-up, limit the amount used at any one time to a few ounces.
  • Sensitive individuals may experience skin irritation and sensitisation upon contact.

Numbers that matter

  • 0.792 specific gravity: Represents a highly volatile, light liquid that is water-thin for rapid mixing and thinning.
  • -95°C freezing point: Ensures the solvent remains in a liquid, usable state well below standard operating temperatures.
  • 0.5% maximum water content: Low moisture levels prevent unwanted chemical reactions and moisture-contamination when thinning sensitive epoxies and resins.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adheseal Acetone

Q: Can I use Adheseal Acetone to clean epoxy applicators?

A: Yes. Its rapid-dissolving capability makes it highly effective for cleaning uncured epoxy from tools and mixing vessels. Always use in a well-ventilated area to avoid vapour build-up.

Q: Is this product safe for polystyrene foam substrates?

A: No. Acetone will dissolve polystyrene foam. Avoid using it for cleaning or thinning near foam insulation or foam mouldings.

Q: What is the evaporation rate of Adheseal Acetone?

A: It evaporates very rapidly—slower than ether but significantly faster than most commercial solvents. This makes it ideal for quick drying without residue.

Q: Can I use it to thin polyester or PU adhesives?

A: Absolutely. It’s compatible with acetone-based PU and PVC adhesives and polyester resins used in marine or auto fibreglass applications.

Q: Is this solvent environmentally friendly?

A: Yes. It contains zero VOCs and is considered VOC-exempt under Australian emission standards, making it suitable for environmentally sensitive applications.

Applying Adheseal Acetone: Protocols & Best Practices

General Application Steps:
  1. Preparation: Work in a well-ventilated space. Identify surfaces that need degreasing or adhesive removal.
  2. Application: Apply a small quantity using a lint-free cloth or brush. Avoid overuse to prevent vapour accumulation.
  3. Wipe-Off: Use clean dry cloths for residue removal. For precision work, use a cotton bud or syringe applicator.
  4. Dry Time: Evaporates within seconds depending on ambient temperature. Wait before applying new adhesive layers.

Limitations & Safety

Product limitations and safety information

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for polystyrene foam—causes chemical damage
  • Highly flammable—keep away from heat, sparks and open flame
  • Do not use in confined spaces without ventilation

Safety & Handling:

  • PPE: Nitrile gloves, safety goggles, solvent-resistant apron
  • Ventilation: Use in well-ventilated areas only
  • Handling: Use small quantities to limit vapour exposure
  • First Aid: If inhaled, move to fresh air. If in eyes, flush for 15 mins. Seek medical help if irritation persists.

Adheseal Acetone Adhesion & Preparation Guide

    Substrate preparation guidelines
