When you need to bond timber, boards, and metals structurally, quickly, and with D4 waterproof integrity, reaching for the right solution is critical. Adheseal Unobond FC is a single-pack, polyurethane adhesive formulated for demanding construction and marine applications. Packaged in a 6kg drum, it allows for efficient, high-coverage application, securing large areas with superior, invisible bonds.

Why this product exists

Formulated to eliminate production inefficiencies and unreliable bonds in large-scale applications, Adheseal Unobond FC delivers superior, fast-setting, D4 waterproof, structural bonds across diverse materials. Its single-pack, solvent-free polyurethane chemistry cures rapidly with ambient moisture, providing robust adhesion without mixing. The 6kg drum format ensures efficient coverage for production-scale bonding, preventing project delays and rework.

The numbers that matter

  • D4 Water Resistance: This isn't just water-resistant; it's classified D4. That means it withstands a 72-hour boiling water test, making it suitable for exterior and marine environments where persistent moisture exposure is a factor.
  • 5 N/mm² Tensile Strength: Unobond FC is a structural adhesive, not just a grab glue. It forms bonds that are often stronger than the substrates themselves, designed to hold under significant load.
  • 15-Minute Working Time, 60-Minute Pressing Time: With a 15-minute working time and 10-minute skin time, you have the window needed to align components precisely. Then, press for just 60 minutes at 0.6 N/mm² to establish initial structural integrity, accelerating project timelines.
  • 0.1-0.25mm Bond Line: Designed for tight-fitting joints, ideally between 0.1-0.25mm, with a maximum of 0.5mm. This ensures optimal strength and an invisible finish, expanding slightly to fill minor irregularities for a solid bond.

What it's like to use

Prepare surfaces to be structurally sound, dry, and clean, ensuring at least one surface contains moisture for optimal cure. For impervious metals, wipe clean with Xylene, then sand lightly to improve adhesion. Apply Unobond FC over one surface, spreading it evenly within the 15-minute working time. If conditions are dry or bonding non-porous materials, a light mist of water on the second surface aids curing. Bring components together immediately, clamping tightly for a minimum of 60 minutes. Maintain 50 PSI for softwoods or 150 PSI for hardwoods to ensure proper adhesive spread. Clean wet spills and tools with Xylene. Cured adhesive requires mechanical removal.

Where this product excels

  • Marine and Exterior Woodwork: For wooden boat building and external timber applications, its D4 water resistance and resilience ensure long-term durability against moisture.
  • Furniture, Cabinets, and Joinery: Integrate with clamping cycles in manufacturing furniture, cabinets, and joinery components. The defined working and pressing times support efficient production with fewer rejects.
  • Flooring Systems: Apply a bead into the groove of each panel in tongue-and-groove flooring. The slight expansion fills voids, helping prevent movement and reducing squeaks for a solid, professional finish.
  • General Construction and Mixed Materials: Bond timber, boards, concrete, and metals in general construction and mixed-material assemblies. Its versatility reduces the need for multiple adhesive systems across diverse substrates.
  • Display Signs and Fabrication: Achieve reliable, structural bonds for display signs and other fabricated assemblies where various materials need to be joined securely.

Choose this when

  • When you need structural, D4 waterproof bonds for long-term durability in wet or external conditions.
  • When undertaking bulk applications requiring efficient, high-coverage bonding from a 6kg drum format.
  • When working with materials like timber, boards, concrete, and metals where a single, versatile adhesive is preferred.
  • When manufacturing furniture, cabinets, or marine components where fast setting and strong, invisible bond lines are critical.
  • When installing flooring systems and aiming to reduce squeaks and improve panel stability.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Use as a gap filler, as this reduces the strength of the adhesive. It is designed for tight-fitting, structural bonds.
  • Not for: Totally confined spaces, as the adhesive requires atmospheric humidity to cure properly.
  • Not for: Adhering mirrors; consider Adheseal High Power 609, testing first for compatibility.
  • Not for: Structural glazing; for these applications, Adheseal N-80 or N-60 glazing silicones are recommended.

Achieves D4 water resistance, backed by a 72-hour boiling water test, assuring long-term durability in wet and external conditions. Its low VOC content meets “green star” environmental criteria, supporting sustainable building practices.

Unobond FC vs. Unobond (Cartridge)

Adheseal Unobond FC is a structural adhesive designed for tight-fitting bond lines (0.1-0.25mm ideal, max 0.5mm) and efficient, high-coverage application from its 6kg drum. It is not designed for filling voids where bond strength would be compromised. For smaller, precise applications or jobs requiring a non-drip gel consistency, consider Unobond in a cartridge format, which offers the same D4 waterproof, structural bonding for spot applications.

Frequently asked questions

Can Unobond FC be used in wet or exterior conditions?

Yes, Unobond FC is rated D4 for waterproof bonding. It withstands a 72-hour boiling water test, confirming its suitability for marine and demanding exterior applications where water exposure is constant.

Is clamping required for Unobond FC?

Yes, consistent clamping or firm pressure is essential for maximum bond strength. Maintain pressure for at least 60 minutes at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, applying 50 PSI for softwoods and 150 PSI for hardwoods.

Can I use Unobond FC as a gap filler?

No, Unobond FC is an adhesive, not a primary gap filler. Using it as such reduces the structural strength of the bond. For gap filling, dedicated products like Adheseal GapFilla are more appropriate.

What are the critical application conditions for Unobond FC?

Apply Unobond FC at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C. Crucially, at least one of the bonding surfaces must have a moisture content of at least 8% for proper cure activation.

Applying Unobond FC: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. 1. Assess and Prepare Substrates

Correct surface preparation is essential for structural bond strength and long-term durability.

    Porous substrates (timber, concrete, boards)

Ensure substrates are structurally sound, stable and free from dust, loose or friable material, oils, grease, curing compounds and other contaminants. Allow new concrete to cure for at least 28 days before bonding and remove surface laitance by mechanical means if necessary.

    Non-porous and metallic substrates

Lightly abrade metals and dense surfaces, then use the two-wipe method with a suitable solvent such as xylene and fresh cloths. Replace cloths regularly to avoid spreading contamination back over the surface.

Timing: Allow any solvent cleaner to evaporate fully before applying Unobond FC to avoid trapping solvent in the bond line.
Pro Tip: Substrates should contain enough internal moisture to activate curing but must be free of standing surface water. Aim for around 8% moisture in timber for consistent performance.
  2. 2. Dispense and Spread the Adhesive

The liquid format of Unobond FC allows efficient coverage across large areas when spread correctly.

    Dispensing from drum

Open the drum and use appropriate dispensing equipment or a decanting process to apply adhesive onto one of the bonding surfaces. Keep the adhesive band approximately 10 mm in from external edges to minimise squeeze-out.

    Spreading to correct glue-line thickness

Use a spatula or suitable spreader to distribute Unobond FC evenly, targeting a glue line of approximately 0.1–0.25 mm (maximum 0.5 mm). Ensure complete coverage without pooling.

Timing: Unobond FC skins in about 10 minutes at 23°C and 50% RH; complete spreading and assembly within this window.
Pro Tip: On very dry or non-porous substrates, a light mist of water on the mating surface can assist moisture cure, especially in cool or low-humidity conditions.
  3. 3. Assemble, Clamp and Allow to Cure

Firm, even pressure across the joint ensures structural performance and predictable results.

    Bringing joints together

Bring the bonding surfaces together immediately after spreading and clamp tightly and evenly. Generate enough pressure to close joints and see some controlled squeeze-out along the edges.

    Pressing and cure time

Maintain clamping pressure for at least 60 minutes at 23°C and 50% RH with a pressing load of roughly 0.6 N/mm². Full cure is typically reached after about 24 hours, although low temperatures and humidity will slow the reaction.

Timing: Extend clamping and cure times if conditions are cooler, drier or if substrate moisture content is low.
Pro Tip: Let squeeze-out cure fully before trimming it away with a sharp blade. Trying to wipe it while wet will smear adhesive across the surface and make cleanup harder.
  4. 4. Cleanup and Drum Storage

Good cleanup and storage habits protect tools, maintain product quality and keep sites tidy.

    Cleaning tools and spills

Clean tools and fresh spills with xylene while the adhesive is still wet. Once cured, Unobond FC can only be removed mechanically by scraping or sanding.

    Personal cleanup and storage

Use appropriate hand wipes for skin cleaning and avoid solvent-based skin cleaners. After use, reseal the drum lid securely to limit exposure to air and store between 15°C and 25°C in a cool, dry place.

Timing: Perform solvent cleaning immediately after application. Once adhesive cures, expect mechanical removal only.
Pro Tip: Date-mark opened drums and rotate stock so older product is used first, maintaining predictable performance across projects.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Gap filling where the primary intent is not structural bonding. Using it as a general gap filler reduces bond strength.
  • Not for: Totally confined spaces without atmospheric humidity. The adhesive requires moisture from the air or substrate to cure properly.
  • Not for: Adhering mirrors. Use a dedicated mirror adhesive like Adheseal High Power 609, always testing first.
  • Not for: Structural glazing applications. Use specific glazing silicones like Adheseal N-80 or N-60 for these applications.
