Everbond Styrobond ST is a specialized rubber-solvent contact adhesive formulated specifically for the fabrication of insulated panels and SIPs. Unlike conventional contact adhesives that dissolve or pit expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, this foam-safe formula ensures the structural integrity of the core remains intact when laminating to sheet metal, fibre cement, or plywood.

Successful bonding requires precise workflow management, including a spray-grade application achieving 2.5 m²/L yield and the mandatory use of mechanical nip-rollers delivering at least 700 kg/m² of pressure to prevent edge lifting.

To avoid bond softening or failure from solvent entrapment, surfaces must be combined only after the solvent has completely evaporated, particularly when mating non-porous substrates in environments above 18°C with low humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Styrobond ST

Q: Will Styrobond ST damage polystyrene foam?

A: No. Styrobond ST is formulated with polystyrene-safe solvents, making it ideal for EPS foam without causing melting or degradation, unlike traditional contact adhesives.

Q: What type of spray equipment is required?

A: Use conventional spray guns with a sustained pressure of 450–850 KPa. Ensure even spray patterns to avoid weak bonding areas.

Q: Can this adhesive be used in cold weather?

A: Avoid use below 18°C, especially in high humidity. Cold, damp conditions can result in moisture condensation and weakened bonds.

Q: How should I clean tools after application?

A: While wet, clean with hexane or xylene. Once cured, mechanical removal is required. Avoid letting residue dry on spray guns.

Applying Styrobond ST: Protocols & Best Practices

General Application Steps:
  1. Preparation: Ensure all surfaces are dry and clean. Remove grease or dust, especially on metals. Use solvent for degreasing metals.
  2. Application: Apply a uniform coat to both surfaces with a spray gun at 20–30 cm distance. Let dry until tack-free.
  3. Joining: Bring surfaces together and press firmly using a hand roller, rubber mallet, or nip roller with ≥700 kg/m² pressure.
  4. Drying Time: Drying depends on ambient conditions. Ensure complete solvent evaporation before assembly, especially for non-porous surfaces.
Trade-Specific Scenario Guides:
For Insulation Installers: Wall Panel Bonding

The Engineering Challenge: Avoiding foam damage during large-scale EPS panel bonding on site.

The System-Based Solution with Styrobond ST: Spray-grade application provides quick, even coverage without melting foam, reducing material failure.

Best Practice Note: Always ensure solvents are fully evaporated before joining to prevent bond failure.

Limitations & Safety

Product limitations and safety information

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for temperatures below 10°C or high-humidity environments.
  • Ensure surfaces are completely dry—trapped solvent weakens the bond.
  • Not for continuous submersion or structural applications.

Safety & Handling:

  • PPE: Gloves, goggles, and solvent-resistant clothing recommended.
  • Ventilation: Use in a well-ventilated area to avoid fume inhalation.
  • Handling: Store sealed in cool, dry conditions. Avoid heat or flame.
  • First Aid: In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

Styrobond ST Adhesion & Preparation Guide

    Substrate preparation guidelines
  • Polystyrene Foam (EPS): Ensure surface is clean and dry. Avoid solvents. - Primer: No primer required.
  • Sheet Metal: Wipe with solvent to remove oil or grease. Allow to flash off. - Primer: No primer required.
  • Fibre Cement Sheet: Clean of dust and debris. Apply evenly. - Primer: No primer required.
  • Plywood / Particleboard: Light sanding optional for best adhesion. Clean thoroughly. - Primer: No primer required.
