Sika Primer-3 N is a solvent-based, 1-component epoxy resin primer engineered to provide a high-performance adhesion bridge for sealants in demanding facade and infrastructure applications. This liquid compound deeply penetrates porous substrates like concrete and masonry while creating a water-repellent barrier to prevent moisture-related bond failure.
By using a short 30-minute flash-off time, the primer allows for efficient site progression while significantly reducing the risk of adhesive failure in high-movement expansion joints. It is compatible with Sikaflex, SikaHyflex, and Sikasil ranges, maintaining a stable bond between +5 °C and +40 °C provided the substrate temperature is at least 3 °C above the current dew point.
For optimal results, ensure cement laitance is mechanically removed and apply in a single coat using a clean brush or roller to achieve a yield of up to 8 m²/l on non-porous surfaces.
Q: Do I really need to use a primer on concrete? The surface looks fine.
A: Yes. Even clean, sound concrete is porous and can have a dusty micro-surface. The primer penetrates these pores, binds any loose particles, and creates a consistent, high-energy surface for the sealant to bond to. Skipping the primer is the most common cause of long-term adhesion failure.
Q: What happens if I apply my Sikaflex sealant after the 8-hour maximum flash-off time?
A: After 8 hours, the primed surface can become contaminated with airborne dust and moisture, and its chemical reactivity may decrease. This can compromise the bond. If you exceed the window, you should re-clean and re-apply a fresh coat of primer to ensure optimal adhesion.
Q: Can I apply Sika Primer-3 N over a painted surface?
A: Generally, primers are designed for direct contact with the base substrate. The performance of Sika Primer-3 N on a painted surface will depend entirely on how well the paint is bonded to the substrate. For critical applications, it's recommended to remove the paint to expose the original substrate. If this isn't possible, a small adhesion test is essential.
Q: My 250ml bottle has been open for 6 weeks in the van. Is it still okay to use?
A: No. Sika Primer-3 N must be used within one month of opening. It is a reactive product, and exposure to atmospheric moisture over time will cause it to lose effectiveness, even if it hasn't gelled. For guaranteed results, always use a primer that is within its 1-month open-life window.
Q: The primer is transparent. How do I know where I've applied it?
A: While transparent, Sika Primer-3 N will give the substrate a slightly 'wet' or darker appearance upon application. The key is to be systematic. Work in a defined section, ensuring you methodically cover the entire joint face or bonding area before moving to the next.
