Achieve a perfectly smooth, feather-edge finish on internal concrete, masonry, or masonite slabs. RLA TruLevel Fine Finish is the rapid-drying skim compound that creates a flawless underlayment from 0mm to 3mm, allowing floor coverings to be installed within 20 minutes.

Why this product exists

This compound addresses minor surface imperfections and unevenness, preventing them from 'telegraphing' through and compromising the final appearance of expensive floor coverings like vinyl or carpet. Unlike bulk levelling compounds designed for thicker applications, TruLevel Fine Finish focuses on cosmetic smoothing and patching, preparing the substrate for an optimal finish.

The numbers that matter

  • Maximum 3mm thickness: This allows for precise, thin-layer corrections, making it ideal for skim coating and patching without adding unnecessary bulk or weight to the slab. It is not designed for significant level changes.
  • 20 minutes to floor coverings: Rapid drying means floor coverings can be installed just 20 minutes after application at 20°C. This significantly cuts project timelines, reducing downtime on site.
  • 10m² @ 1mm per 5kg bag: This demonstrates efficient material usage for thin applications, optimising costs for surface preparation.
  • EC1 Plus VOC: Achieving EC1 Plus certification means very low emissions. This ensures improved indoor air quality, critical for internal residential and commercial projects.

What it's like to use

RLA TruLevel Fine Finish mixes easily with water at a 1 part water to 3 parts powder ratio, creating a workable compound. Avoid overwatering, as this compromises bond and strength. Apply the mix with a trowel, working from feather-edge up to 3mm. For non-absorbent surfaces like existing ceramic tiles, a 3mm coating ensures proper adhesive wet-out for subsequent floor coverings. While priming is generally not required, very porous substrates benefit from a coat of RLA Universal Primer (mixed 1:2 with water). Tools clean up with water immediately after use.

Where this product excels

This compound excels in internal applications demanding a high-quality, thin-layer surface finish. It is ideal for preparing concrete, masonry, and masonite substrates for resilient floor coverings like vinyl and carpet. TruLevel Fine Finish provides a fast, reliable solution for patching minor defects and smoothing uneven areas in both new construction and refurbishment projects. Its role extends to the crucial final skim coat in floor preparation for non-habitable wet areas, applied after a moisture barrier like RLA Moisture Seal, ensuring a pristine base for subsequent finishes.

How it fits in a real system

In a 'Wet Wall and Floor to Non-Habitable Area' system, RLA TruLevel Fine Finish typically serves as the final surface preparation after the application of an RLA Moisture Seal. This ensures the underlayment is smooth and ready for the chosen floor covering, optimising adhesion and finish in environments like internal laundries or storage rooms.

Choose this when

  • When preparing internal concrete, masonry, or masonite substrates for resilient floor coverings (vinyl, carpet).
  • When a perfectly smooth, feather-edge finish up to 3mm is required.
  • When project timelines demand rapid floor covering installation within 20 minutes.
  • As the final skim layer in non-habitable wet area floor systems, post-moisture sealing.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: bulk levelling applications thicker than 3mm. For significant level changes, consider RLA Aftek TruLevel BulkFill UT Self-Levelling Compound.
  • Not for: timber or other flexible substrates. For timber floors, RLA True Level Flexi Self-Levelling Compound is the appropriate choice.
  • Not for: external applications or areas prone to contact with water during or after curing.
  • Not for: substrates exhibiting rising dampness or over expansion joints, which can lead to reflective cracking.
  • Not for: structural repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can I install floor coverings after using RLA TruLevel Fine Finish?

You can install most resilient and carpet floor coverings after approximately 20 minutes, provided conditions are 20°C and 50% RH. This rapid drying time helps keep projects on schedule, reducing delays for subsequent trades.

What is the maximum thickness for RLA TruLevel Fine Finish?

This product is designed for applications from feather edge up to 3mm in a single coat. For ceramic tiles and other non-absorbent surfaces, a minimum 3mm coating is recommended to ensure proper adhesive wetting.

Can I use this product over expansion joints?

No, RLA TruLevel Fine Finish should not be applied over expansion joints. Doing so can lead to reflective cracking, compromising the integrity of both the underlayment and the final floor covering.

Is priming always necessary before application?

Priming is generally not required for most suitable substrates. However, for particularly porous surfaces, it is recommended to prime using RLA Universal Primer, mixed 1 part primer to 2 parts water.

Applying RLA TruLevel Fine Finish: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure internal substrates are sound, smooth, dry and clean. Remove weak layers, laitance, contaminants and sharp protrusions; repair defects flush. Verify RH/pH where resilient finishes will be installed (AS 1884:2021).

    Mechanical Prep

Grind/abrade to expose a clean, stable surface. Vacuum thoroughly.

    Priming (as required)

On porous substrates, roll RLA Universal Primer diluted 1:2 (primer:water) to a continuous film and allow to dry.

Timing: Allow primer to dry; cold conditions lengthen dry time.
Pro Tip: Address moisture first — apply a vapour barrier where RH is elevated.
  2. Mixing

Add powder to water and mix to a lump-free consistency.

    Measured Mix

Approx. 1.8 L clean water per 5 kg (about 1:3 water:powder). Mix 3–4 minutes until uniform. Do not over-water.

    Batching Tips

Use clean pails and tools. Mix only what you can place within the ~10-minute open time.

Timing: Open time ~10 minutes at 20 °C.
Pro Tip: Avoid re-tempering with water; this reduces bond strength.
  3. Application

Trowel from feather edge to 3 mm in a single coat.

    Standard Skim

Apply to required height or incline for localised smoothing. Keep edges tight to blend with adjacent surfaces.

    Over Non-Absorbent Tiles

Place a uniform 3 mm layer to achieve adhesive wet-out for subsequent floorcoverings.

Timing: Set in ~20 minutes at 20 °C; cooler weather extends set.
Pro Tip: Protect from water during and after curing; internal use only.
  4. Ready for Floorcoverings

Install most floorcoverings once the skim can be walked on without damage (typically ~20 minutes at 20 °C). Follow adhesive manufacturer’s guidelines.

    Foot Traffic

Allow adequate time before general foot traffic; more time in cold conditions.

Timing: Cool temperatures and high humidity extend all times.
Pro Tip: Avoid spanning movement or expansion joints; reflective cracking can occur.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Exterior use. This product is formulated for internal applications only.
  • Not for: Continuous contact with water during or after curing. Prevent water exposure to avoid compromising performance.
  • Not for: Substrates with rising dampness. High moisture levels require a dedicated moisture barrier like RLA Moisture Seal prior to application.
  • Not for: Application over expansion joints. This can lead to reflective cracking and system failure.
  • Not for: Application outside the temperature range of +5°C to +35°C. Performance and drying times will be affected.
  • Not for: Thicknesses exceeding 3mm in a single coat.
