Applications in Practice: Trade Scenarios

For Window Installers (Fenestration): Sealing Perimeter Joints

The Professional's Challenge

Sealing the perimeter of aluminium window frames against masonry requires a sealant that can handle the different thermal expansion rates of metal and concrete, preventing water ingress and air leaks over the long term.

The Adheseal Solution

Adheseal PU-15's low modulus and ±25% movement capability easily accommodates this differential movement. Apply a continuous bead into a clean, primed joint, ensuring good contact with both the powder-coated aluminium and the masonry. Its excellent adhesion creates a durable, weatherproof seal that won't fail.

Best Practice Note

For optimal adhesion on powder-coated frames, lightly abrade the surface and clean with Adheseal 50A Surface Prep. Use a backing rod to ensure the correct 2:1 width-to-depth ratio for the joint.

For Builders (Precast/Tilt-Up): Sealing Expansion Joints

The Professional's Challenge

Expansion joints in precast or tilt-up concrete panels are critical for structural integrity, but need a reliable seal to prevent water entry and damage. The sealant must be durable enough to withstand building movement and harsh weather exposure.

The Adheseal Solution

PU-15 is the ideal choice for these high-movement joints. Its high elasticity and tear resistance ensure it doesn't split or lose its bond as panels shift. After ensuring the concrete is cured and primed with Everflex Supaprime, apply PU-15 over a backing rod to form a robust, permanently flexible, and waterproof seal.

Best Practice Note

Ensure concrete is cured for at least 28 days before application. Use an open-cell backing rod 25% larger than the joint width to control sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion.

Applying Adheseal PU-15: Professional Protocol

  1. Joint Preparation & Priming

Proper preparation is critical for a long-lasting seal. Ensure the joint is correctly designed and the substrate is ready to accept the sealant.

    Surface Cleaning

All surfaces must be structurally sound, stable, dry, and free of dust, oils, grease, and any other contaminants. Use the two-wipe process with Xylene on non-porous surfaces.

    Joint Design & Backing Rod

Install an open-cell foam backing rod 25% larger than the joint width to control sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion. The ideal sealant depth should be half the joint width (2:1 ratio).

Pro Tip: To ensure clean lines, mask the edges of the joint with tape before you begin. Remove the tape immediately after tooling, while the sealant is still wet.
  2. Application & Tooling

Apply the sealant with a steady, consistent motion to ensure the joint is completely filled without entrapping air.

    Applying the Sealant

Cut the nozzle at a 45° angle. Hold your sausage gun at a 45° angle and push the sealant ahead of the nozzle, ensuring it makes full contact with both sides of the joint.

    Tooling Off

Immediately after application, tool the sealant with a moistened spatula or finishing tool to create a smooth, concave finish. This ensures good contact and a professional look.

Timing: You have approximately 60 minutes of skin time at 23°C. All tooling must be completed within this window for the best results.

Limitations & Safety

Product Limitations

!
Not suitable for long-term water immersion or for use inside swimming pools. Avoid exposure to high levels of chlorine (max 5ppm).
!
Do not apply in totally confined spaces, as the sealant requires atmospheric moisture to cure properly.
!
Not suitable for structural glazing applications. Use Adheseal N-80 or N-60 Glazing Silicone instead.
!
Not recommended for use on natural stone like marble or granite, as staining may occur. A stain test is mandatory before use on any stone. Use Adheseal S100 for stone applications.

Substrate Preparation & Priming Guide

Porous Substrates (Concrete, Masonry, Brick)

Surfaces must be structurally sound, dry, and clean. Remove all dust, loose material, oils, and curing compounds. New concrete must be allowed to cure for a minimum of 28 days before application.

Primer required for optimal adhesion

For critical applications, high-stress joints, or extreme weather exposure, prime the surface by applying one coat of Everflex Supaprime with a brush. Allow primer to become touch-dry (30 mins to 2 hours) before applying sealant.

Everflex Supaprime

Non-Porous Substrates (Aluminium, Powder Coat, PVC)

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any oils or grease. For best results, use a two-wipe process with a suitable solvent like Xylene. Lightly abrading the surface with a fine abrasive pad can improve the bond.

Primer recommended for critical applications

While PU-15 has excellent adhesion, priming is recommended for multi-story buildings or highly stressed joints. Pre-treat the cleaned surface with Adheseal 50A Surface Prep applied with a clean cloth. Allow 30 mins to 2 hours before applying sealant.
