For roofs, balconies, and internal wet areas requiring a highly flexible barrier, Duram 195 is a single-pack, moisture-curing polyurethane membrane that cures to form a seamless, Class III elastomeric barrier. Tested to AS 4654.1 for external above-ground use, it accommodates structural movement across concrete, cementitious screeds, and lightweight sheeting without cracking or losing adhesion.

How it works

Duram 195 uses a self-leveling, moisture-curing polyurethane chemistry that bonds directly to primed substrates, eliminating the risks of joints, seams, or laps. Unlike conventional aromatic polyurethanes, it incorporates UV stabilisers, UV absorbers, and antioxidants to provide enhanced stability during the construction phase. Because the formulation is completely bitumen and tar-free, it will not stain grout or tiles when covered. The cured membrane also inhibits mould and biological growth, protecting covered internal wet areas from under-tile degradation.

Numbers that matter

  • Class III Elongation (400% at break): Tested to AS 4654.1 Appendix A, providing high elasticity to bridge thermal movement in exposed balconies, roofs, and timber-to-concrete junctions without rupturing.
  • 1.5mm dry film thickness (DFT): The minimum required thickness for standard horizontal applications without a top coat, achieved by applying two coats at 0.75m² per Litre per coat (0.66mm WFT per coat).
  • 1.2mm minimum DFT system spec: When applied as a system with Duram Multithane ATC top coat, the minimum dry film thickness is 1.2mm as per Test Report DC12517-002.
  • 48-hour full cure: Based on standard conditions of 25°C at 50% Relative Humidity. Touch dry in 4 to 6 hours, with a recoat window of 6 to 24 hours.
  • Low VOC (<100 g/L): Compliant with the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) Green Star environmental criteria.

Where to use it

Duram 195 is suitable for above and below-ground applications on clean, sound, and dry substrates including concrete, cementitious screeds, masonry, and lightweight composite sheeting. On exposed roofs, decks, terraces, balconies, podiums, and gutters, it must be top-coated with Duram Multithane ATC to prevent UV degradation. In tiled or covered wet areas, it provides long-term waterproofing under screeds and finishes.

Limitations

  • Do not apply directly to damp or slightly damp surfaces, as this prevents adhesion and causes gassing and bubbling of the membrane. The surface must be completely dry.
  • Not suitable for direct and prolonged contact with chlorine concentrations above 10 ppm.
  • Not designed as a trafficable membrane; only infrequent maintenance foot-traffic is acceptable during construction.
  • Direct tile adhesion is not advised. For direct-stick tile applications, seek technical advice from Duram. An unbonded screed is typically required.
  • Do not use particleboard sheeting as a substrate for this waterproofing system.
  • In exposed areas, the membrane must be coated with Duram Multithane ATC or covered to prevent slow degradation from direct sun exposure.

Surface preparation and priming

Cementitious substrates must be cured to a minimum compressive strength of 20MPa. Substrate moisture must measure below 75% RH via in-situ probe testing (ASTM F2170) or below 4.5% via non-destructive comparative testing (ASTM F2659). Slab-on-grade elements require an effective damp-proof membrane underneath. All laitance must be removed via shot blasting, sandblasting, or grinding to achieve a clean profile.

Lightweight sheeting must be dry, clean, and installed to the manufacturer's structural recommendations with all sheet edges supported on framing. Cut edges must be treated to maintain water resistance, and sheet joints must be detailed using Perm-a-fab, Duram Leak-Seal Tape, or a DualFlex Bandage.

Surfaces should be primed with Duram Primeseal MC at a rate of no less than 1 Litre per 4m² (or Duram Primeseal SP at 1 Litre per 7m²) and allowed to dry. If there is a risk of entrapped substrate moisture causing outgassing, apply two coats of Duram Primeseal MC. For metal surfaces, abrade to meet AS 1627.4 Class 2.5 and prime with Duram ME Primer.

Installation and detailing

For internal wet areas, install joints, fillets, and bond breakers in accordance with AS 3740 using a 12mm bead of compatible sealant. For external above-ground applications, install fillets in accordance with AS 4654.2 using a 15mm x 15mm bead of compatible sealant, and chamfer all external corners.

Treat non-structural static cracks under 1.6mm wide with a 150mm wide detail coat of Duram 195. Cracks wider than 1.6mm and construction joints must be ground out to a minimum width of 6mm, filled with a compatible sealant over a backing rod or bond-breaker tape to maintain a 1:1 width-to-depth ratio, and then treated with a 150mm wide detail coat of membrane before full application.

Apply the membrane by brush, roller, broom, or squeegee in a minimum of two coats. Apply the second coat within 36 hours of the first to ensure strong inter-coat adhesion without repriming. If dilution is necessary due to site temperature or viscosity, thin only with Duram Solvent up to a maximum of 1 Litre per 15 Litre pail. Do not use alternative solvents, as they will cause curing failure, slow drying, gassing, or gelling.

Frequently asked questions

Can Duram 195 be used on an exposed roof or balcony?

No, Duram 195 is designed for non-UV exposed applications. For exposed areas like roofs or balconies, it must be top-coated with Duram Multithane ATC to prevent degradation from direct sunlight.

Can I tile directly onto Duram 195?

Direct tile adhesion is not advised. For under-tile applications, an unbonded screed is typically required. Consult Tremco CPG for project-specific advice on bonded or direct stick tile systems.

What happens if Duram 195 is applied to a damp surface?

Applying Duram 195 to damp or even slightly damp surfaces will cause gassing and bubbling of the membrane, or prevent it from adhering correctly. The surface must be completely dry before application to ensure proper adhesion and cure.

Is Duram 195 compliant with Australian standards?

Yes, Duram 195 meets the criteria of AS 4654.1 2012 as a Class III elastomeric waterproofing membrane. This compliance confirms its suitability for external above-ground waterproofing systems when properly installed and protected.

Applying Duram 195: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure substrates are sound, dry and clean. Repair blowholes/defects with Resiflex FC; allow to cure. Rebate wastes and seal perimeters.

    Moisture Control

If moisture risk exists, specify two coats of Primeseal MC before membrane to prevent gassing.

    Joint Detailing

Seal cracks/joints with Resiflex FC; reinforce with Leak-Seal Tape where live movement is expected.

Timing: Proceed only once primers are dry per their TDS.
Pro Tip: Freedom from surface water and continual dampness is essential for film integrity.
  2. Membrane Application

Apply by brush, roller, broom or squeegee in two coats to achieve target DFT.

    Floors/Tanking

~1.5 L/m² total; aim for ~1.5 mm DFT (each coat ~0.5 mm dry).

    Verticals/Non-tanking walls

Typically ~1.0 mm DFT (as specified); water-resistant non-tanking walls minimum ~0.75 L/m² at ~0.5 mm DFT.

    Timing: Touch dry ~4–6 h; recoat 6–24 h; full cure ~48 h+ (environment dependent).
Pro Tip: Apply the second coat within 36 h for optimal inter-coat bond. If exceeded, re-prime.
  3. Top-Coating & Coverings

In exposed exterior areas, over-coat Duram 195 with Multithane ATC (~3–4 m²/L). For tiling, top with sand/cement screed and provide joints to AS 3958.1.

    Protection Layers

Roofs/podiums: protection sheeting, geotextile/drainage cell before ballast/pebbles. Ground works: protection and drainage layers before backfill.

    Solvent Thinning (If Needed)

Only with Duram Solvent, max ~1 L per 15 L pail; consult technical advice. Do not use alternative solvents.

Timing: Allow Duram 195 to cure before top-coating or covering.
Pro Tip: Monitor for bubbling/pin-holing in warm, dry conditions; lightly over-roll wet membrane if needed.

Product limitations

  • Not for: direct traffic. Although infrequent maintenance foot-traffic is acceptable during construction, Duram 195 is not designed as a trafficable membrane.
  • Not for: direct and prolonged contact with chlorine concentrations above 10 ppm, which can compromise membrane integrity.
  • Not for: direct tile adhesion without specific technical advice from Duram/Tremco CPG, as an unbonded screed is typically required.
  • Not for: application to damp or slightly damp surfaces. This will cause gassing, bubbling, or prevent proper adhesion. The surface must be completely dry.
  • Not for: exposed UV applications without a top coat. Duram 195 must be coated with Duram Multithane ATC or covered for long-term performance in direct sunlight.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation and priming are critical for Duram 195 to achieve its specified adhesion and long-term performance.

Concrete and cementitious screeds

Surface prep: Substrate must be cured to at least 20 MPa compressive strength. Clean the surface thoroughly, ensuring it is free of laitance, mould, paint, sealers, and contaminants. Shot blasting is the preferred method for laitance removal. Remove protrusions and fill voids greater than 5 mm. For trafficked membranes, prepare to CSP 3 (ICRI 03732).

Primer: Required. Surface moisture content must be dry; less than 75% RH (ASTM F2170) or less than 4.5% (ASTM F2659). Prime with Duram Primeseal MC at 1 Lt per 4 m², or Duram Primeseal SP at 1 Lt per 7 m². If entrapped moisture is a risk, apply two coats of Duram Primeseal MC. Allow primers to touch dry.

Lightweight composite sheeting

Surface prep: Ensure the sheeting is dry, clean, smooth, firm, and free of all release agents, dust, and projections. Sheeting must be installed per manufacturer's recommendations with supported edges and correct fixings. Treat all sheet joints with an approved compound and detail with Perm-a-fab, Duram Leak-Seal Tape, or DualFlex Bandage. Cut edges must be treated to maintain water resistance.

Primer: Required. Conduct substrate-specific moisture testing to confirm dryness. Consult Tremco CPG for advice on pre-applied film-forming coatings.

Non-porous substrates (e.g., metal, plastics)

Surface prep: For small detailing areas like pipe penetrations or hobs. Mechanically abrade metal surfaces to AS 1627.4, class 2.5 ('Near White Metal'). Mechanically abrade plastic surfaces to create a profile. Clean all non-porous substrates with an IPA wipe, ensuring residual solvent flashes off.

Primer: Required. For metal, apply Duram ME Primer. If rusted, treat with a rust converter first. Project-specific adhesion testing is recommended, especially for galvanised substrates or large areas.
