For residential and light commercial tiling jobs where large-format or heavy tiles risk slipping on walls, ARDEX X 17 Tile Adhesive provides a non-slump, polymer-fortified mortar bed. It achieves an S1 classification to accommodate the subtle movement of common wall and floor substrates, including fibre-cement sheets and liquid-applied undertile waterproofing membranes.
What it does
ARDEX X 17 is a cement-based adhesive formulated with mastic-type properties, allowing you to hang heavy porcelain, mosaics, fully vitrified ceramic tiles, and stable natural stones without sagging. The formulation provides an extended wet-edge window for positioning and micro-adjustments before curing, maintaining a minimum 1.0 MPa tensile adhesion strength under dry, wet, heated, and freeze-thaw service conditions.
Numbers that matter
-
S1 flexibility class: Confirms the cured adhesive layer deforms sufficiently to absorb the structural deflection of timber-framed subfloors and thermal expansion on external screeds.
-
30-minute open time: Gives a practical application window at 23°C to spread and comb the bed before the adhesive skins over.
-
20-minute adjustment time: Allows you to realign large-format panels and level lippage without breaking the adhesive bond.
-
3-hour pot life: Keeps the mixed batch workable in the bucket to reduce waste on complex layouts.
-
3mm to 10mm bed thickness: Accommodates irregular tile backs and minor substrate variations without hollow spots or shrinkage cracking.
Where to use it
Suitable for internal and external walls and floors across these prepared substrates:
- Concrete, renders, and screeds
- Fibre-cement sheet and plasterboard on walls
- Compressed fibre-cement sheet on floors
- ARDEX liquid applied undertile waterproofing membranes
- Existing stable ceramic tiles (internal dry areas only, minimum 80% glaze removed)
- Ceramic Tile Underlay (CTU) at least 6mm thick (for tiles with an edge length of 100mm or greater)
Limitations
- Do not use in continuous immersion applications such as swimming pools or water tanks.
- Do not use over metal, timber, or other substrates subject to high shrinkage and structural movement.
- Do not use on floors where the deflection is greater than the joist span divided by 500 (joist span must comply with AS 1684).
- Do not use for moisture-sensitive natural stones; these require products from the ARDEX Natural Stone System.
- Do not apply at temperatures below 10°C.
How to apply
Prepare the substrate to ensure it is clean, firm, free of dust, oil, and release agents, and dry with no permanent damp. Allow concrete substrates to cure for at least 4 weeks, bonded screeds for 24 hours, and unbonded screeds for at least 7 days before tiling. Prime porous substrates with ARDEX Multiprime before application.
To mix, add the powder to clean water at a ratio of 1 volume of water to 3 volumes of powder (approximately 6 to 6.5 litres of water per 20kg bag). Mix thoroughly for 2 minutes using a heavy-duty electric drill (650rpm) and a mixing paddle. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes, then remix for an additional 2 minutes to achieve a thick, creamy consistency. Do not add extra water after mixing.
Press tiles firmly into the freshly combed mortar bed and slide them at right angles to the notch pattern to achieve full coverage. Butter the backs of ribbed or keyed tiles. Allow approximately 24 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity before grouting or permitting foot traffic; allow longer drying times in humid climates, low temperatures, or when tiling over dense substrates.
