For industrial concrete floors subject to heavy-duty vehicle traffic, ARDEX RA 54 fills interior control joints and new construction saw joints to support heavy wheels and prevent joint edge spalling. This fast-setting, semi-rigid polyurea formulation cures rapidly, allowing repaired joints to be shaved in 45 minutes and opened to full traffic in 90 minutes at 23°C.

What it does

ARDEX RA 54 is a semi-rigid joint sealant designed to protect concrete joint edges from chipping under the impact of heavy warehouse and industrial traffic. With a Shore A hardness of 75 to 80, it provides the necessary rigidity to support wheel loads across the joint while maintaining 10% to 12% joint movement to accommodate minor thermal cycling. The material feeds by gravity into prepared joints, can be overfilled, and is shaved flush with the floor surface using a sharp floor scraper after curing.

Numbers that matter

  • 90-minute cure time: Rapid return-to-service window at 24°C, minimizing facility downtime by allowing vehicle traffic shortly after application.
  • 75 - 80 Shore A hardness: High semi-rigid support to reinforce concrete joint shoulders against heavy-duty wheel loads.
  • 8.3 MPa tensile strength: High cohesive strength to maintain joint integrity under stress.
  • 45-minute shave window (at 23°C): Practical timing for installers to scrape excess overfilled material flush with the concrete surface. This window varies by temperature: 20 minutes at 38°C to 49°C, 45 minutes at 21°C to 27°C, and up to 2 hours at 10°C to 15°C.
  • 0 g/L VOC: Clean formulation suitable for interior industrial installations without solvent emissions.

Where to use it

Suitable for horizontal concrete surfaces, including interior control joints, new construction saw joints, and cured cracks. It can be used in exterior applications only when joint movement from thermal cycling remains minimal (10% to 12%). For heavy-duty traffic areas, joint width must be a maximum of 19mm with a minimum depth of three times the width, or 60mm. For light foot traffic, the joint width must be a maximum of 19mm with a minimum depth of 13mm.

Limitations

  • Do not use in expansion joints; ARDEX RA 54 is not designed for joints subject to high movement.
  • Highly sensitive to moisture during application and cure. Do not apply if any dampness or moisture is present in the substrate or environment.
  • New concrete must be fully cured for a minimum of 28 days to release moisture before application.
  • In exterior applications, the grey material will initially change colour to grey-green before returning to grey after 90 days.
  • Do not attempt to force adhesive out of a hardened mixing nozzle; always use a new nozzle with each new cartridge to avoid cartridge rupture or improper mixing.

How to apply

Ensure the concrete bonding surfaces are clean, sound, and dry. Old concrete must be profiled or mechanically roughened with a wire brush or sandpaper, while new concrete must be at least 28 days old. Cut along cracks using a saw or grinder with a dry diamond or abrasive blade to create a clean 90° angle, preventing feathered edges. Blow out all dust and debris from the joint.

Insert a backer rod or clean kiln-dried sand into the bottom of the joint prior to dispensing. This prevents three-sided adhesion (bonding to the bottom), which causes sealant failure during joint expansion and contraction. Dispense the polyurea using steady, full trigger pulls to gravity-feed the joint, slightly overfilling if the joint is to be shaved flush.

Topcoat compatibility

If applying a topcoat over ARDEX RA 54, wait 24 hours after application before applying a primer. A premium primer must be applied before any topcoat is laid down. Always install a small test area of the primer and topcoat system and observe it for 7 days to verify adhesion and compatibility before proceeding with the full application.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ardex RA 54 be used for all concrete joints?

No, Ardex RA 54 is engineered for interior control joints and new construction saw joints in horizontal concrete. It is not designed for expansion joints. For exterior applications, it handles minimal movement (10-12%).

How quickly can traffic return to a repaired joint?

Vehicle traffic can resume in 90 minutes after application. This rapid cure time is a key benefit, significantly minimising downtime in industrial or commercial settings.

Is Ardex RA 54 suitable for outdoor use?

It can be used outdoors where thermal cycling causes minimal joint movement, specifically 10% to 12% of the installed joint width. Be aware of an initial colour change from grey to grey-green, which will return to grey after approximately 90 days.

What are the key safety considerations when using Ardex RA 54?

This product is hazardous and requires careful handling. Wear protective gloves, eye protection, and ensure adequate ventilation. Part A is toxic if swallowed or inhaled, and may cause skin and respiratory sensitisation. Refer to the SDS for full details.

Applying Ardex RA 54: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Step 1: Joint & Surface Preparation

Ensure the substrate and environment are completely dry. New concrete must be 28+ days old. Cut or re-cut joint edges to a vertical 90° angle. Do not create a feathered edge. For heavy traffic, ensure joint depth is minimum 60mm. For light traffic, minimum 13mm. Blow out all dust, debris, and contaminants.

Pro Tip: This product is moisture-sensitive during cure. A dry substrate is non-negotiable for a first-time-right result.
  2. Step 2: Install Backing (Recommended)

To allow for the 10-12% joint movement and prevent 3-sided adhesion, install a backer rod or a small amount of Kiln-Dried sand to the bottom of the joint. This is critical to prevent bond failure from joint expansion or contraction.

  3. Step 3: Cartridge & Tool Setup

Insert the 254mL cartridge into a heavy-duty caulking gun. Remove the plastic cap. Dispense a small amount until both materials flow evenly. Secure the mixing nozzle. Pointing up, purge air from the nozzle, then dispense one stroke of material into a waste container.

Pro Tip: Never transfer a used nozzle to a new cartridge. If a leak develops or the nozzle hardens, replace it immediately to avoid rupturing the cartridge.
  4. Step 4: Application & Filling

Place the nozzle tip directly over the joint. Use full, smooth trigger pulls and let the material gravity-feed into the joint to avoid air bubbles. Overfill the joint slightly so the material is higher than the concrete surface.

  5. Step 5: Shaving & Curing

Allow the material to cure for approximately 45 minutes (at 23°C). Once cured, use a sharp floor scraper to shave the excess material from the surface, leaving a perfectly flush and level joint.

Timing: The joint can be opened to full vehicle traffic just 90 minutes after the initial application.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Expansion joints. This is a semi-rigid sealant designed for minimal joint movement, not dynamic expansion.
  • Moisture: Cannot be used if any dampness is present on the substrate or in the environment during application and cure. Moisture sensitivity is critical for initial performance.
  • Exterior colour: Exterior applications will see an initial change from grey to grey-green, returning to grey over 90 days.

Safety and handling

Danger: This product is hazardous. Part A contains isocyanates, which are toxic and can cause serious health effects.

Personal protective equipment

Wear protective gloves (nitrile or Viton recommended), safety glasses with side shields or chemical goggles, and full body protective clothing. In conditions of inadequate ventilation, or when spraying, use respiratory protection such as a full face respirator with supplied air or self-contained breathing apparatus. An eyewash unit and barrier cream should be available.

Ventilation

Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Local exhaust ventilation is required, especially during spraying or when mixing with other components, to prevent inhalation exposure to isocyanate vapours.

First aid

  • Ingestion: Immediately call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor. Do not induce vomiting unless advised by medical professionals.
  • Inhalation: Move person to fresh air. If not breathing, apply artificial respiration. Seek medical attention immediately. Asthmatic symptoms may be delayed.
  • Skin Contact: Immediately flush with large amounts of water and soap. Remove contaminated clothing. Seek medical advice if irritation or rash occurs.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids apart. Seek medical advice immediately.

Storage and disposal

Store in original, tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, locked up, and away from incompatible materials. Keep containers securely sealed to prevent contamination, especially with water. Dispose of contents and containers at an authorised hazardous waste collection point according to local regulations.

Substrate guide

Correct surface preparation is critical for Ardex RA 54 performance, ensuring optimal adhesion and preventing product failure.

Concrete

Surface prep: Substrate and environment must be completely dry before application. Freshly poured concrete requires a minimum 28-day cure. Existing concrete must be clean, dry, and free from contaminants like dust, dirt, grease, oil, or wax. Mechanically roughen smooth surfaces using a wire brush or sandpaper. For joints, cut along the crack with a saw or grinder, ensuring 90° edges. Blow out all dust and debris. Place a backer rod or kiln-dried sand to prevent bonding to the joint's bottom, which avoids bond failure during movement.

Primer: Not required for direct application to concrete. A premium primer is required if a topcoat is to be applied 24 hours after RA 54 application. Follow primer manufacturer instructions.
