For high-moisture tiled areas where persistent dampness leads to mould and staining, ARDEX FS-DD is a non-sanded, cement-based tile grout that resists both water absorption and dirt penetration. Formulated with a special hydrophobing agent and ARDEX Grout Shield, this compound keeps joints up to 4mm wide clean and free from fungal or algal growth in internal and external installations.
How it works
The non-sanded formulation is highly suited to scratch-prone surfaces such as porcelain and glass tiles. Once cured, the structure of the grout prevents water and dirt residue from seeping into the joint, which maintains colour consistency and reduces the risk of efflorescence. The inclusion of ARDEX Grout Shield actively combats mould growth in wet areas like domestic and commercial showers. For specialized installations on timber floors or within swimming pools, the grout can be mixed with diluted ARDEX Grout Booster to provide the required flexibility and bond strength.
Numbers that matter
-
Up to 4mm joint width: Allows for fine joint grouting without shrinkage or cracking.
-
5-hour walk-on time: Fast-drying formula achieves initial set to accept light foot traffic after 5 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.
-
24-hour cleanup window: Formulated for easy wash-off, allowing final dry film and smears to be polished off the tile face up to 24 hours after the initial clean-off without leaving residue.
-
20 MPa compressive strength: Meets CG1 classification requirements under AS 4992, providing high mechanical strength after 14 days.
-
2.5-hour pot life: Generous working time at 23°C and 50% relative humidity to mix and apply larger batches before the mortar begins to set.
Where to use it
Suitable for grouting wall and floor joints in domestic and commercial wet areas, bathrooms, showers, and external balconies. Compatible tile and stone substrates include:
- Porcelain and ceramic tiles
- Glass tiles
- Terrazzo, slate, and quarry tiles
- Moisture-insensitive natural stones
Limitations
- Do not use for chemical-resistant joints; use ARDEX WA or ARDEX Abapoxy instead.
- For expansion or movement joints, do not use grout; use a compatible ARDEX silicone sealant.
- Certain porous face tiles, such as terracotta or textured natural stones, may be prone to surface discolouration and must be sealed before grouting.
- In swimming pools, colours may bleach over time. For these applications, use ARDEX FS-DD Ultra White mixed with diluted ARDEX Grout Booster, and allow 14 days full cure before adding pool chemicals. For public pools, ARDEX Abapoxy is recommended.
Application advice
Ensure tile joints are thoroughly clean, free of dust, and that the tile adhesive has firmly set before grouting. When cleaning off, use a damp, dense sponge working diagonally across the joints. Keep water to a minimum during clean-up to prevent shade variation, efflorescence, and water float. For external installations, protect the unhardened grout from extreme climate conditions during application and throughout the initial curing phase.
