For below-ground tanking, covered external decks, and internal wet areas, SILCOR 560 HB LVOC is a one-part, grey polyurethane membrane that cures to form a seamless, elastomeric barrier. It is tested to AS4654.1 for external waterproofing and compliant to AS4858:2004 for internal wet areas when applied in accordance with AS3740:2010.

How it works

The liquid-applied polyurethane chemistry cures via ambient humidity to form a fully bonded, monolithic membrane. Because it bonds directly to the prepared substrate, it prevents water from tracking underneath the barrier in the event of a localized puncture. The elastomeric structure achieves Class III cyclic crack bridging, allowing it to span non-structural concrete shrinkage cracks and tolerate normal structural movement without cracking. Formulated free of bitumen and tar, the membrane will not bleed or stain adjacent finishes.

Numbers that matter

  • > 550% Elongation: Class III high elasticity to absorb movement across internal corners and sheet joints without tearing.
  • 1.5mm Minimum DFT: The baseline dry film thickness floor required for external above-ground, below-ground tanking, internal floors, and non-potable water tanks, applied in two coats.
  • 1.75mm WFT (2.55kg/m²): The target wet film thickness per application to ensure the completed barrier meets the minimum dry film thickness specification.
  • 12 to 48 Hour Recoat Window: The standard curing window at 22°C and 60% RH allowed before applying the second coat; minimum tack-free time is 4 hours.
  • 48-Hour Full Cure: The minimum dry time required at 22°C and 60% RH before the membrane can be flood tested, backfilled, or topped by other trades.
  • > 1.5 MPa Adhesion: High bond strength to primed concrete surfaces to prevent delamination.

Where to use it

This membrane is suitable for application on cured, stable, and primed concrete, blockwork, brick, cementitious screed, render, water-resistant timber, plywood, particle board, compressed fibre cement sheet (CFC), cement composite sheet (CCS), glass reinforced concrete (GRC), rendered aerated autoclaved concrete (AAC), and metals. Common structural jobs include:

  • External Below Ground (tanking): Lift pit walls, retaining walls, basement walls, and non-potable water storage tanks.
  • External Above Ground (covered): Balconies, podiums, landscaped decks, planter boxes, roof decks, and window or door reveals.
  • Internal Wet Areas: Bathroom floors, shower trays, laundries, toilets, and foyers. Note that it is generally not used on internal wet area walls.

Limitations

  • Non-trafficable: SILCOR 560 HB LVOC is not designed to tolerate foot or vehicle traffic.
  • Not UV-stable: The membrane must be protected from direct or indirect UV exposure within 14 days of application. For exposed turn-ups, SILCOR Top Coat 75 must be applied within 72 hours.
  • Humidity Cured: High temperatures and high humidity accelerate skinning and cure. Low temperatures and low humidity extend cure times. Relative humidity below 25% can prevent the product from curing.
  • Concrete Parameters: Concrete substrates must have a minimum compressive strength of 25 MPa, and pull-off strengths of 1.0 MPa (non-trafficable) or 1.5 MPa (trafficable). Porous, low-strength, or burnished concrete is unacceptable.
  • Container Shelf Life: Once opened, the product reacts with humidity and may solidify in the pail within days.

Priming and Preparation

All substrates must be clean, dry, and free of laitance, curing compounds, and contaminants. Priming requirements vary by substrate condition and type:

  • Substrates below 5.0% moisture content: Prime with SILCOR Primer BS or SILCOR Primer BW Clear/Grey at a minimum rate of 0.3kg/m². Low-porosity surfaces and CFC sheets must be primed with SILCOR Primer BS for optimal penetration.
  • Substrates below 10.0% moisture content: Prime with SILCOR Primer BW Clear at a minimum rate of 0.3kg/m². For low-porosity concrete, dilute the first coat up to 20% with clean water to penetrate pinholes, then re-prime undiluted within 24 hours.
  • Lightweight Cement Composite Sheet (CCS): Prime using only SILCOR Primer BS at a minimum rate of 0.3kg/m² in two or more coats. Inadequate priming can cause delamination within the laminar structure of the sheet.
  • Metals: Abrade or blast steel, aluminium, zinc, galvanised steel, copper, or stainless steel to SA 2.5 near-white metal, solvent wipe with xylene or MEK, and prime within 30 minutes to prevent oxidation.
  • Outgassing Prevention: Apply primers in the late afternoon or evening when substrate temperatures are stable or falling to prevent concrete outgassing and membrane pinholing.

Detailing and System Components

A complete waterproofing system requires specific detailing components prior to membrane application:

  • Bond Breakers: Install 15 x 15mm fillets of SILCOR LM PU Sealant for external areas, and 12 x 12mm fillets for internal areas at all junctions, penetrations, and outlets. Allow to cure for 24 hours.
  • High Movement Joints: Center a polyethylene-faced, single-sided adhesive slip tape (such as 3M 8979 or Tesa 58663) over expansion joints, construction joints, or active cracks. Slip tape must be at least 90mm wide for expansion joints.
  • Reinforcing PE Fabric: Where reinforcing is required in high-movement areas without slip tape, embed Reinforcing PE Fabric strip into a wet 1.0mm DFT coat of membrane, ensuring no bubbles or wrinkles, and wet through completely with a second 1.0mm coat of membrane.

Frequently asked questions

Safety and handling

Danger

Personal protective equipment

Wear protective gloves (nitrile rubber), protective clothing, safety glasses with side shield protection, face protection, and hearing protection. If exposure limits are exceeded, use approved respiratory protective equipment.

Ventilation

Ensure adequate ventilation, especially at floor level, as fumes are heavier than air. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. If experiencing respiratory symptoms, call a POISON CENTER/doctor.
  • Skin contact: Wash with plenty of soap and water. Take off contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse. If irritation occurs, seek medical advice.
  • Eye contact: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Immediately call a POISON CENTER/doctor. Causes serious eye damage.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.

Storage and disposal

Store in original, unopened packaging between 15°C and 25°C, under cover, protected from heat, ignition, moisture, frost, and direct sunlight. Keep containers tightly sealed and cool in a dry, well-ventilated place. Dispose of contents and container according to local regulations; do not allow product to reach sewage systems.

Substrate guide

Proper substrate preparation and priming are critical for the long-term performance and adhesion of the waterproofing membrane. Follow these guidelines to ensure a robust bond.

New concrete

Surface prep: Ensure concrete is well compacted and moist-cured as per AS 3600. It must be a minimum of 14-28 days old. Concrete compressive strength must be at least 25 MPa, with a surface pull-off strength of 1.0 MPa (non-trafficable) or 1.5 MPa (trafficable). Finishes should be steel trowel, light power float, or off-form, avoiding porous, tamped, or broom finishes. Remove all laitance, curing compounds, and contaminants.

Primer: Required. Use SILCOR Primer BS, SILCOR Primer BW Clear, or SILCOR Primer BW Grey depending on moisture content (<5% or <10%). Apply at a minimum rate of 0.3kg/m².

Compressed fibre cement (CFC) and cement composite sheets (CCS)

Surface prep: Sheets must be installed to manufacturer’s requirements, clean, dry, and free of all surface sealers, coatings, and acrylic primers. For CCS, careful preparation is vital due to its laminar structure and low internal strength.

Primer: Required. For CFC, use SILCOR Primer BS, SILCOR Primer BW Clear, or SILCOR Primer BW Grey. For CCS, use only SILCOR Primer BS at a minimum 0.3kg/m², often requiring two or more applications for penetration and consolidation.

Metals

Surface prep: Remove all dirt, dust, oil, grease, corrosion, and oxides. Roughen the surface by abrasion or garnet blasting to SA 2.5 (near white metal). Solvent wipe with MULTITEK Xylene or MEK before priming.

Primer: Required. Prime within 30 minutes of preparation to minimise oxidation. For difficult-to-prime metals like stainless steel, a silane coupling agent (e.g., Dow Corning DC1200 OS) may be required.

Rendered aerated autoclaved concrete (AAC)

Surface prep: The AAC surface must be rendered to seal and provide a strong, smooth finish. Allow the render to dry to a moisture content below the maximum allowable for the chosen primer.

Primer: Required. Select the appropriate SILCOR primer based on moisture content, as for concrete.
