Applications in Practice: Trade Scenarios

For Auto Technicians: Repair ABS Bumper Damage On-Site

The Challenge

ABS bumper cracks are difficult to fix long-term without distortion or primer issues.

The Solution

The syringe-format MMA applies quickly, cures fast, and holds under road vibration. Keep one in every glove box or mobile van.

For Sign Installers: Bonding Acrylic to Coated Metal Fascias

The Challenge

Mixed materials can expand and flex with weather, causing cracking or de-bonding.

The Solution

MMA adhesive flexes slightly while maintaining strength. Quick to apply with no mixing mess or cleanup.

For Boatbuilders: Fibreglass Trim Assembly Without Clamps

The Challenge

Marine adhesives must resist salt, shock, and movement while working cleanly in tight spaces.

The Solution

This MMA system fills gaps and sets in 10–12 minutes — no clamps or gun needed. Perfect for detail bonding in marine fit-outs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What plastics does Selsil Plastic Welding MMA bond to?

It forms strong, permanent bonds to ABS, acrylic (PMMA), polycarbonate, fibreglass (GRP), rigid PVC, and many coated metals. It is not suitable for PE, PP, PTFE, or silicone rubber.

Do I need a dispensing gun or special tools?

No gun needed — the product comes in a 28 g syringe with a static mixer tip. Simply push the plunger to apply; ideal for mobile or small-scale use.

How long do I have to position the parts after applying?

You have approximately 3–6 minutes of working time before the adhesive begins to gel. After 10–12 minutes, it reaches handling strength.

Can I use it outdoors or in marine environments?

Yes. Once cured, it’s highly resistant to moisture, UV, vibration, and salt exposure. It’s suitable for marine, exterior signage, and vehicle repairs.

How should I store unused adhesive?

Keep the syringe sealed and store it in a cool, dry place between 5–25 °C. Avoid heat and direct sunlight. Shelf life is up to 12 months unopened.

How to Use Selsil Plastic Welding MMA

  1. Step 1: Surface Preparation

Clean all bonding surfaces thoroughly. Remove dirt, oil, grease, and surface oxidation. For best results, lightly abrade glossy plastics and metals, then clean with isopropyl alcohol.

  2. Step 2: Open and Attach Nozzle

Twist off the syringe cap. Attach the static mixing nozzle (provided) to ensure even 1:1 mixing of both adhesive components during application.

  3. Step 3: Apply the Adhesive

Push down on the syringe plunger to dispense the adhesive onto one surface. Apply a uniform bead and bring parts together immediately.

  4. Step 4: Assemble & Hold

Align parts precisely and hold for 10–12 minutes until initial cure. Clamping is only required for heavy or misaligned components.

  5. Step 5: Final Cure

Allow 24 hours for full cure at room temperature. Avoid heavy loads or exposure to water during this period.

Limitations & Safety

Product Limitations

  • Not suitable for low surface energy plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or PTFE (Teflon).
  • Do not apply to dirty, oily, or wet surfaces — surface prep is essential.
  • Not recommended for silicone rubber or elastomers.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure above 120 °C once cured.

Safety Precautions

  • Use in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhalation of fumes.
  • Wear safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves during use.
  • Keep away from open flames — product is flammable until cured.
  • Dispose of unused material and packaging in accordance with local regulations.

Emergency First Aid

  • Eye Contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes and seek medical help.
  • Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing.
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth and consult a doctor immediately.

Plastic Welding MMA Application Guide

ABS & Polycarbonate

Ensure all bonding surfaces are clean, dry, and free from mould release agents, oils, and oxidation. Abrade with fine grit sandpaper if necessary and wipe with isopropyl alcohol for optimal adhesion.

No primer typically required

Plastic Welding MMA has strong adhesion to ABS and PC substrates without primer in most applications.

Acrylic (PMMA)

Remove any surface stress or oxidation using fine sanding and cleaning with solvent. Ensure surfaces are smooth and dry before bonding.

No primer typically required

Plastic Welding MMA chemically bonds well to PMMA without priming under standard conditions.

PVC & Vinyl

Wipe with a PVC-safe cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to remove surface plasticisers. Light abrasion may be beneficial for aged or gloss-finished PVC.

Primer recommended for optimal adhesion

On flexible vinyls or high-plasticiser PVC, use a surface activator or test adhesion strength before full use.

Adheseal Vinyl Activator

Fibreglass (FRP)

Sand with 120–180 grit to remove gelcoat and roughen bonding surface. Clean thoroughly with acetone or isopropyl alcohol and ensure no moisture is present.

No primer typically required

Plastic Welding MMA bonds directly to sanded fibreglass laminates without priming.

Metal (Aluminium, Mild Steel)

Degrease with acetone, abrade with 80–120 grit for mechanical key, and clean again before application. Ensure surface is dry and free of rust or oxide layers.

Primer required for critical applications

Use Adheseal Metal Primer 601 for maximum bond reliability on bare metals or in high-load applications.
