For external rooftops, decks, balconies, and walkways where a slip-resistant, weather-exposed finish is required, Gripset LS Trafficable Coating provides a hard-wearing top coat that withstands light foot traffic and permanent UV exposure. This solvent-free, non-shrinking formulation applies over suitable base liquid membranes to protect the underlying waterproofing system from climatic wear without requiring sand casting or aggregate additions.

What it does

Gripset LS Trafficable Coating acts as a protective, light grey, non-slip finish coat over base liquid membranes on substrates such as concrete, screeds, compressed fibre cement sheeting, exterior grade plywood, and well-bonded existing tiles or pavers. It is flexible to accommodate thermal movement, though it is non-elastomeric and must not be used as a standalone crack-bridging membrane on suspended areas. It resists algae and fungi growth, prevents water ponding degradation, and can be built up in high-film thicknesses to increase long-term durability on exposed service areas and maintenance walkways.

Numbers that matter

  • 108 Shore A hardness (ASTM D2240-97): A dense, high-durability surface profile that resists physical wear from light maintenance foot traffic.
  • 45% Elongation (AS1145.3): Provides controlled flexibility to move with structural substrates without cracking, while remaining non-elastomeric.
  • 1.0mm minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT): Achieved by applying two separate coats at 750 microns wet film thickness (WFT) per coat, ensuring uniform coverage of 1.5 litres/m² across the system. An optional third coat can be applied to reach 1.5mm DFT for extended service life.
  • 4-hour recoat window: Allows multi-coat build-up within a single day under standard conditions (23°C and 50% relative humidity) before traffic or flood testing.
  • 10-day full cure: The required curing window before the system can be flood tested or subjected to its full design service conditions.

Where to use it

  • Rooftops: Applied as the UV-stable protective top coat over Gripset 38FC, Gripset P39, or Xpress Multi Pro base membranes.
  • Decks and balconies: Protects primary elastomeric membrane systems from localized wear and weathering.
  • Exposed rooftop plant and maintenance areas: Provides a dedicated, non-slip service path for maintenance personnel around machinery.
  • Walkways: Serves as a standalone water-resistant, slip-resistant coating over ground-level paths, or as part of a multi-layer membrane system on suspended walkways.

Limitations

  • Do not use as a standalone, elastomeric crack-bridging membrane for suspended areas. Suspended areas require a primary base layer of Gripset P-39 or Xpress Multi Pro.
  • Not suitable for areas subject to vehicular traffic or heavy commercial foot traffic.
  • Do not apply in areas subject to rising damp or negative hydrostatic pressure.
  • Do not apply when the surface temperature is below 5°C or above 35°C, or if rain is imminent.

How to apply

All substrates must be clean, dry, and free from surface contaminants such as curing compounds, laitance, or existing failed coatings. Concrete must cure for a minimum of 28 days, and screeds or sand-cement renders for 7 days. Apply the product by brush or medium nap roller. Apply the first coat at 750 microns wet film thickness (10m² coverage per 15-litre pail) and allow to dry for 4 hours. Apply the second coat at right angles to the first coat to ensure complete, pinhole-free coverage. Use a wet film gauge during application to verify and regulate consistent film build across the entire surface area. Clean up tools and spills with water while the coating is wet; dried material must be removed mechanically.

Frequently asked questions

Where can Gripset LS be used?

Gripset LS is designed for external floor surfaces on rooftops, podiums, balconies, and walkways. It functions as a hard-wearing, non-slip finish coat over a suitable Gripset liquid base membrane system.

Does Gripset LS provide crack bridging?

No, Gripset LS is not an elastomeric crack bridging membrane. It must be applied over a suitable Gripset base liquid membrane system like Gripset P-39 or Xpress Multi Pro, which handle substrate movement.

What level of traffic can Gripset LS withstand?

Gripset LS is suitable for light foot traffic only. It is not designed for vehicular traffic or commercial foot traffic, which require different surface solutions.

How thick should Gripset LS be applied for durability?

Apply a minimum of two coats for a 1.0 mm dry film thickness at 1.5 litres/m². For enhanced durability, apply a third coat to achieve 1.5 mm dry film thickness at 2 litres/m² total coverage.

What is the cure time for Gripset LS?

Gripset LS is ready for light foot traffic after 24 hours. Full cure, including suitability for flood testing, is achieved after 10 days. Recoat time between coats is 4 hours, all at 23°C and 50% RH.

Applying Gripset LS: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure substrate is part of a fully cured Gripset membrane system (P39, 38FC, or Xpress Multi Pro). The membrane must be clean, dry, and free from contaminants.

    Membrane Base Systems

Follow the primer and base membrane application requirements of the selected Gripset system before top coating with LS.

Timing: Apply LS once the base membrane has cured and is trafficable.
Pro Tip: Apply LS in dry conditions to avoid surface defects.
  2. Top Coat Application

Apply by brush or medium nap roller in two or three coats, with each coat applied perpendicular to the previous.

    Standard Durability

2 coats at a total of 1.5 L/m² for 1mm dry film thickness.

    Enhanced Durability

3 coats at a total of 2 L/m² for 1.5mm dry film thickness.

Timing: Recoat after 4 hours; light foot traffic after 24 hours; full cure in 10 days.
Pro Tip: Use a wet film gauge to ensure each coat meets specified thickness.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Vehicular traffic or commercial foot traffic. Gripset LS is designed for light foot traffic only.
